Overview

The Field Director, Hematology & Oncology, Medical Affairs is responsible for the effectiveness of the Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs). They are responsible for ensuring excellent Key Engagement Leader (KOL) identification and mapping, territory alignment and effective goals and measures for KOL engagement. They ensure that the MSL team is effectively trained in both scientific knowledge and communications skills. They own the ongoing activities of the MSL team, re-prioritizing focus and activities as needed to address RRD’s needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Field Director, Hematology & Oncology, Medical Affairs takes ownership for overseeing and ensuring that the following activities are completed with high quality, effectively, and efficiently:
•    Leading a successful Medical Science Liaison (MSL) field team, including but not limited to:
•    Recruiting and hiring excellent candidates with the optimal mix of scientific knowledge, clinical experience, communication skills and drive to meet RRD’s requirements.
•    Onboarding new MSLs to ensure they have the knowledge and skills they need to successfully execute their role as efficiently as possible.
•    Ensuring ongoing training of all MSLs to maintain their scientific and communication skills.
•    Establishing appropriate and compliant metrics for MSL performance, tracking those metrics and reporting on those metrics.
•    Managing personnel issues with MSLs to maximize field engagement and minimize disruptions.
•    Developing RRD’s KOL engagement strategy and then successfully implementing that strategy, including but not limited to:
•    Targeting KOL engagement based on RRD’s Medical Strategy.
•    Identifying potential KOLs for engagement, prioritizing those KOLs and establishing expectations about engagement with the various priorities of KOLs.
•    Aligning MSL KOL engagement territories to ensure that the prioritized KOLs have consistent MSL engagement.
•    Managing KOL engagement during MSL staffing gaps, both temporary and longer-term in nature, ensuring that RRD does not lose its engagement with its KOLs.
•    Ensuring that MSLs are gathering and reporting on insights gathered during KOL interactions and that those insights are being effectively summarized and appropriately shared with the rest of the RRD organization.
•    Serving as the MA point person for commercial in support of commercial’s speaker programs, providing speakers with MSL resources for training and to assist in answering their questions. 

The Field Director, Hematology & Oncology, Medical Affairs is directly responsible for delivering the following:
•    Contributing to RRD’s overall Medical Strategy in partnership with other RRD functions, gaining feedback on the Medical Strategy and ensuring alignment with the Medical Strategy throughout RRD.
•    Coordinating with the cross-functional team to provide direct support and MSL support in RRD’s advocacy engagement activities.
•    Managing the successful engagement with congresses/meetings, including ensuring that congresses/meetings are appropriately prioritized, congresses/meetings have the right resources deployed to provide the coverage needed, KOL engagements are planned and executed and senior leaders that attend the congresses/meetings have the opportunity to interact with KOLs appropriately.
•    Contributing to RRD’s scientific data evolution plans by identifying gaps in RRD’s current data along with other MA functions and highlighting those gaps which are expected to be addressed by the current clinical development program.

The Field Director, Hematology & Oncology, Medical Affairs also supports a range of other CD/MA functions in their delivery efforts, including but not limited to:
•    Supporting in RRD’s advisory boards by serving as a subject matter expert and by leveraging the knowledge of the MSLs to identify and engage with potential advisory board members.
•    Supporting through their knowledge and expertise, the Health Economic and Outcomes Research activities.
•    Ensuring alignment with  the Clinical Trials Liaison Managers as they engage KOLs that are also Principal Investigators on RRD clinical trials.

Education and Experience

•    Advanced scientific degree (M.D., D.O., Ph.D., Pharm.D.) in Medical, Biological Sciences preferred.
•    Strong scientific background with 5+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry 
managing field-based medical teams.
•    Experience reporting field-based medical metrics and developing innovative metrics to articulate impact of the medical organization
•    Extensive pharmaceutical experience with a good knowledge of the applicable regulations. 
•    Experience in rare diseases is desirable and experience in hematology and oncology is a plus.

Knowledge and Skills

•    Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, basic computer and typing skills, and tools/systems for managing clinical trials.
•    Strong written and verbal English communication and presentation skills.    
•    Skilled at conflict resolution, collaborating with stakeholders with varying viewpoints, influencing with and without authority, and negotiation. Includes relationship management of multiple stakeholders, internally and externally, such as KOLs, networks, PAGs (Patient Association Groups), CROs and others.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. Based upon job requirements, employee may be required at times to attend meetings including travel out of province over weekends and nights. Employee must be able to freely operate and travel by car and train/plane modes of transportation. Employee is required to have a valid driver’s license and passport.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  The employee must be able to fly via a commercial air carrier.  This is largely a sedentary role; however, the employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Occasionally is required to lift and/or move light to moderate weight up to 25 lbs.

Location/Travel

•    This position is field-based.  The position requires domestic travel (up to 70%).
